Thousands of people are killed every year in crashes that involve large trucks or buses — and the causes are often distracted driving, speeding and aggressive driving. On-the-job accidents can cost companies between $74,000-$500,000. But it’s much less than the human toll.
New technologies, in the form of telematics systems connected to the vehicle’s engine control module and dashboard cameras, can spot these risky behaviors for drivers company-wide. Recording near real-time event data helps detect high-risk driving patterns, such as speeding, rapid acceleration, tailgating, harsh braking, lane departures and swerving.
Some of these behaviors can be addressed by fleet managers based on reporting from these systems. Other systems can alert managers in real time, allowing for in-cab coaching of drivers to their reckless behaviors.
A helper in the cab
One video-based safety system supports the driver by combining on-road event data from outward-facing camera with instant voice feedback on negative events. The camera uses algorithms and recognition sensors that track and detect road signs and rolling stops; speed limit signs versus actual speed; lane demarcations and drifting; harsh acceleration or breaking; and keeping too close to the car in front.
After each trip, drivers can review their recorded risky driving events in a personalized mobile application, where they can see their traffic violations in short video clips and watch their metrics improve on a daily basis with regular use.
Full automation makes this technology completely hands-free. The dash camera syncs with the driver’s mobile phone automatically and starts and ends trips on its own for more accuracy and consistency.
A better driver relationship
The interaction between fleet managers and drivers may not be that frequent. Individual conversations can be sporadic and personal experiences may differ. But having an in-cab system in place that keeps daily driving habits in check allows for positive adjustments in driver performance.
Today’s technology enables easier implementation of safety measures that not only protect your company’s high-value assets but also your employees from potential life-risks while on the job. It is critical to provide protection, prevention and safer roads for all drivers in an effort to eliminate traffic fatalities and prepare the next generation of commercial fleet operators.
